Justice Michael Kirby

Justice Kirby was appointed to Australia’s highest court, the High Court, in 1996. From 1984, he served as President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal; in 1983–4, as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia; from 1975, as Deputy President of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission; and from 1975-84, as first Chairperson of the Australian Law Reform Commission.
Justice Kirby has also held many international positions including President of the Court of Appeal of Solomon Islands (1995–6); UN Special Representative in Cambodia (1993–96); President of the International Commission of Jurists (1995–98); Independent Chairman of the Constitutional Conference of Malawi (1994, returning in 1997 for a constitutional symposium); and member of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Commission on Freedom of Association (in 1992-3, he took part in an ILO Mission that examined South Africa’s labour laws).
Justice Kirby has served on the International Advisory Group on Advocacy Training of the Inns of Court School of Law in London; the Board of Governors of the Kinsey Institute within Indiana University in the United States; and the Advisory Board of the International Human Rights Institute of DePaul University in Chicago. He is an Honorary Member of the American Law Institute (2000) and an Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple in London (2006).
