(c) Causes of action

Look at the subjects in your problem. List the possible causes of action involved. Here, a 'cause of action' means a legal right that someone has infringed. Some guides call 'cause of action' the 'basis' of the action or issue, 'claim', or 'theory of the case'. The cause of action might involve an affirmative wrong (for example, a boycott, assault, or ejection); or a legal obligation ignored (for example, an employer's obligation to provide a safe workplace). To give you a rough idea of the words that might describe applicable causes of action, consult the following tables.

Read "Legal Research"

If you have only one legal research guide, we highly recommend Legal Research: How to Find and Understand the Law. It is an American book, but many of the concepts apply universally.
